POTATO

King Edward

Probably England`s best known potato.

King Edward is a late main-crop variety producing moderate yields with high numbers of tubers per plant.

Developed by John Butler of Scotter, Linconshire, King Edward was introduced in 1902 and is also one of the oldest surviving varieties in Europe.

The Coronation of King Edward VII coincided with the introduction of this variety and its name is believed to originate as a ‘commemoration’ of this occasion.

King Edward is predominately white skinned with a pink colouration which makes it easy to identify.

They are mostly oval in shape with creamy flesh, a floury texture, good flavour and shallow eyes.

Although moderately susceptible to drought, King Edward has a high resistance to slugs and bruising.

The plant is tall, erect with many fine stems and a soft feathery top.

The flowers are purple with white tipped petals and are carried above the small dark green slightly glossy open leaves.

The classic Christmas roasted potato.

It has been in constant demand over the years, proof if needed of its outstanding cooking qualities.
